Director Rene ùMartin Larsen of a cooperation project between Ho Chi Minh City Energy Conservation Center (ECC-HCMC), University College of Northern Denmark (UCN) and Kaai Limited on the establishment of the Institute of Energy Training and Green Architecture said, “The development of a green building depends on knowledge and thinking of architects in choosing location and a building’s aspect".
Architects play a very important role in the development of green buildings” in an interview with reporter Phuong Lan.
How do you assess the role of architectural design?
Architectural design plays a very important role to develop a green building because it is the first step to construct a building. Experiences from developed countries showed that raising architects’ awareness is the most important thing.
How do you assess a team of Vietnamese architects?
A team of Vietnamese architects has been aware of the role of green buildings in environmental protection and energy security. However, they still need to have more experiences, skills and knowledge.
Denmark is known as a country with strong development in green buildings. Could you tell us more about experiences for architects to develop green buildings in Vietnam?
ECC-HCMC and UCN jointly cooperated to establish the Institute of Energy Training and Green Architecture in order to support for Vietnam. The institute will have short-term and long-term training courses for Vietnamese architects in green building design.
When the institute is established, Denmark will share experiences to build a green building for Vietnam. The development of a green building depends on knowledge and thinking of architects in choosing location and a building’s aspect. A green building can adapt to weather conditions. In addition, the selection of raw materials and the use of energy-saving devices such as heat pump and solar battery will be mentioned.
However, due to different weather conditions between the two countries, so when transferring experiences from Denmark to Vietnam, we will enroll graduate students to work in both Denmark and Vietnam. These students will take full responsibility to share experiences and select raw materials and energy-saving devices for the construction of a green building. In addition, architects will also practice how to build a green building by directly viewing the Danish Active House in the institute.
The construction of green buildings is very expensive. Do you have any recommendation?
Green buildings have several kinds due to practical experiences. For example, the passive works can save energy by choosing location and a building’s aspect. Therefore, raising architects’ awareness is the most important thing.
In terms of the Danish Active House, the construction will be more expensive due to our investments in energy-saving devices and technology. However, in the long term, due to an increase in energy prices, green buildings will bring effective and safe solutions. In the near future, green buildings will be more lucrative than traditional buildings.
